From the golden tombs of the Moche on Peru’s coastal plain, to the splendor of Cuzco and the magic of Machu Picchu high in the Andes, our tour promises to be an unforgettable adventure. Dr. John Henderson, an expert in the region’s archaeology, will join us.
Friday, July 9
Join us in Lima where we’ll spend two nights at the Las Americas Hotel in the beachfront suburb of Miraflores. The Conservancy will provide 24-hour airport transportation to the hotel.
Saturday, July 10
We’ll spend the morning at leisure. In the afternoon, we’ll tour modern and colonial Lima as well as visit the Larco Herrera Museum.
Sunday, July 11
We’ll spend the morning at the archaeological and anthropological museum. In the afternoon, we’ll fly to coastal city of Trujillo, founded in 1536 by Francisco Pizarro. We’ll spend the next three nights at the Libertador Trujillo.
Monday, July 12
We’ll visit the fabled ruins of Chan Chan, the huge capital of the Chimu Empire and one of the largest pre-Columbian cities in the Americas. We’ll visit the charming fishing village of Huanchaco. We’ll also explore the Temples of the Sun and Moon, constructed by the Moche.
Tuesday, July 13
We’ll visit the Trujillo University Museum and La Huaca Arco Iris, a Chimu temple that was covered with sand until the 1960s, and then have the afternoon free.
Wednesday, July 14
We’ll travel by bus to Chiclayo, located on the north coast of Peru. On our way, we’ll stop at the ruins of La Huaca El Brujo, a newly excavated Moche ruin. We’ll spend the next two evenings at the Gran Hotel Chiclayo.
Thursday, July 15
We’ll visit the new Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum, where exhibits include the treasures from a royal Moche tomb found at Sipán. We’ll also tour the pyramids at Túcume and Sipán and visit the Sicán National Museum.
Friday, July 16
After a morning flight to Cuzco (changing planes in Lima), we’ll spend the day relaxing and getting acclimated. We’ll spend the next two evenings at the Libertador Cuzco Hotel.
Saturday, July 17
We’ll have the morning free and in the afternoon we’ll tour the sites in Cuzco, including Coricancha, an Inca temple whose walls were once covered with gold. Later, we’ll explore the Sacsayhuaman Archeological Park.
Sunday, July 18
We’ll tour nearby Inca ruins including Puca-Pucara and the sacred baths at Tambomachay. Then we’ll travel through the Sacred Valley, stop to bargain at the weekly market in the village of Pisac, and see the Pisac ruins. We’ll spend two evenings at the Libertador Sacred Valley Lodge.
Monday, July 19
In the morning we will visit Willoq, a remote village virtually unchanged since Inca times. Later we’ll visit a valley where residents have produced salt for thousands of years.
Tuesday, July 20
We’ll take the train to Machu Picchu, a site unknown to the outside world until 99 years ago, and spend the day touring its vast ruins. We’ll have dinner and spend the night at the elegant new Sumaq Hotel.
Wednesday, July 21
We’ll tour Macchu Picchu and take an afternoon train to Cuzco. We’ll spend two evenings at the Libertador Cuzco Hotel.
Thursday, July 22
We’ll spend the morning at leisure. We’ll take an afternoon walking tour to several museums.
Friday, July 23
We’ll take a morning flight from Cuzco to Lima where we’ll visit the Museum of the Nation. Day rooms have been reserved at the Las Americas Hotel so that we can rest before the evening flights to the United States, transportation to the airport will be provided.
Cuzco is at an altitude of 11,000 feet. Several sites exceed altitudes of 12,000 feet. People unaccustomed to high altitudes may experience fatigue and dizziness. The tour is not recommended for anyone with a heart or respiratory ailment or any condition that may be exacerbated by high altitudes. A moderate amount of walking is required. Some trails are rough. Participants are held responsible for being in sufficiently good health to take the trip. It is highly recommended that you consult your physician.
